Better and more holistic support is needed for two emerging groups of vulnerable workers - those who could be affected by layoffs when employers reorganise or restructure, and those such as freelancers and agency workers who would be hit hard by market shifts. This is especially as two trends are likely to take root this year, disrupting how work is done and valued - more companies will strive to build flexibility into their workforce and more will seek to exploit artificial intelligence at functional levels. She offered three suggestions - reframe self-resilience so that seeking help is not seen as a sign of weakness; reframe shared accountability so that employers are encouraged to practise fair and responsible employment; and reframe shared responsibility so that lead government agencies are motivated to set goals and design regulations to ensure that workers’ interests are valued.
