China plans to build world's largest hydropower dam in Tibet, could cost as much as US$137b

03:31 Min

Concerns swirling over China's recently approved plan to construct the world's largest hydroelectric dam in southern Tibet. It will be built on Tibet's longest river, the Yarlung Tsangpo, and could cost as much as US$137 billion — more than any other single infrastructure bill on the planet. According to reports, it could be built near the "Great Bend" in Tibet, close to the China-India border. Here, the river drops 2,000m over a short distance of just 50km, so the idea is to harness the river’s energy as it rushes down the bend. The mega dam is expected to have an installed capacity of 60,000 megawatts, generating three times more energy than the Three Gorges Dam.
