Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 1: Dennis Tan on carbon emission regulations for AI
The government should look into regulating the carbon footprint of the use and development of artificial intelligence (AI), said MP Dennis Tan in parliament on Friday (Feb 28). He wanted to know if there is an estimate of how Singapore’s energy demand, especially for industries, may increase with the push for widespread adoption of AI. He also called for the government to look into developing voluntary guidelines and eventually mandating the reporting of energy consumption by AI models, noting that it has been recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme.
