Koh Poh Koon on addressing suicide risks among children and teens

06:38 Min

School counsellors are trained to conduct suicide risk assessments and students at imminent risk are directed to hospital emergency departments while those at non-imminent risk are referred to community mental health teams. The National Mindline 1771 is available to people of all age groups, providing brief counselling and referral to other mental health services where needed. Senior Minister of State for Health Koh Poh Koon said this in parliament on Tuesday (Oct 14) in response to an MP's question. He added that data on the time from school alert on at-risk students to first clinical contact is not currently monitored. He also explained the challenges in setting a key performance indicator for timely intervention, as suggested by an MP.
